Guest posts and their links – what is clean?
Guest posting has two faces: genuine expert exchange (a specialist writes for an audience they could not otherwise reach) and industrialized link building in an article costume. Search engines target the second – and have said so explicitly since 2017.
The working distinction: was the article written for readers, with the link as attribution – or written for the link, with the article as packaging? Anchor texts usually answer honestly.
Rules for hosts, rules for authors – and the anchor-text tell
As the host, your site vouches for everything it publishes – so the policy starts with editorial standards (would this article exist without the link?) and ends with attributes. A sane default: author-bio links and mentions of the author's own projects get nofollow (or ugc – the author is a guest, not the editors); links inside the text follow the normal editorial rule – follow where they genuinely source a claim toward strong targets, nofollow where they merely decorate. Two hard flags: if payment is involved in any form, the whole arrangement moves under the sponsored duty; and if the “guest” insists on a money-keyword anchor (“cheap credit comparison” instead of their name or brand), you are looking at a link transaction, not an article – decline or nofollow. As the author writing elsewhere, the same picture mirrored: write for the hosting audience, link your own work where it truly serves the reader, expect nofollow without grief – the durable yield of guest writing is audience and reputation, and a nofollow link in front of the right readership routinely outearns a follow link nobody sees. The anchor-text tell deserves its own sentence, because it is how link-scheme detection reads guest-post footprints: dozens of articles across unrelated sites, each carrying one exact-match commercial anchor to the same target, form a signature no single clean article can offset. Joomla practicalities for hosts close the loop: guest-author accounts get a restricted editor without raw-HTML freedom, and the site-wide attribute net (our plugin, labelled recommendation) means even the link that slips past editing carries the default – with bypass and whitelist available for the guests you genuinely vouch for.
Key facts
- The decisive question: article for readers with a link – or link with an article around it?
- Host default: bio links nofollow/ugc; in-text links by normal editorial judgement.
- Hard flags: any payment → sponsored duty; money-keyword anchors → transaction, not article.
- Author yield: audience and reputation – a nofollow link before the right readers outearns invisible follow links.
- Footprint warning: repeated exact-match anchors across unrelated sites form a detectable signature.
