What was PageRank sculpting – and why is it dead?

The idea was elegant: if a page divides its value among its links, then nofollow-ing the “unimportant” ones (imprint, login, terms) should leave bigger shares for the money pages – value steering through attributes, hence “sculpting”.

In 2009 Google changed the accounting: value is divided among all links, and the shares of nofollow links simply evaporate. Since then sculpting strictly loses value – the technique died overnight.

Rise, fall – and the lesson that outlived the technique

The rise: in the mid-2000s the value model was public enough to invite engineering, and sculpting was its most seductive product – no new content, no new links, just attribute placement promising measurable gains; for a while it even worked, and audits of the era ritually counted internal nofollows. The fall came as a single announcement at a 2009 conference, later written up by Matt Cutts: the divisor had changed. A page with ten links, five of them nofollow, no longer gave the five follow links a fifth each – it gave them a tenth each, with the other five tenths vanishing. Every sculpted site was suddenly leaking value in exact proportion to its cleverness, and the technique reversed from advantage to self-harm without a single site changing its markup. Why tell the story on a plugin site in 2026? Three reasons. First, zombie advice: sculpting tips still circulate in old articles and forum threads, and “nofollow your imprint links” is copy-pasted to this day – now you know the tombstone date. Second, it explains a design principle: any responsible site-wide nofollow tool leaves internal links alone by construction, ours included, precisely because the only thing internal nofollow achieves today is evaporation. Third, the durable lesson: techniques that exploit a ranking system's accounting live exactly as long as the accounting – while boring fundamentals (crawlable architecture, internal links that mirror real priorities, content worth citing) survive every recalculation. Optimize for the reader's map of your site, and the value flows follow on their own.
